No evangelism without prayer

This day should have been a special Sunday.  We planned an evangelism action during the week. And for today a special service focussed on our visitors.

Unfortunately nothing happened. No house-to-house visits. No guests. No tea. No special service today …

Yes, some young people volunteered to take part. Those five were willing. But not a single parent came forward to support them with prayer. Not even one or two …

That’s why we cancelled it. I don’t blame the youth. But you as parents dropped them. No evangelism without prayer.

Exodus 17 verses 8-13:

8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
9  Moses said to Joshua, “Pick out some men to go and fight the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on top of the hill holding the stick that God told me to carry.”
10  Joshua did as Moses commanded him and went out to fight the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11  As long as Moses held up his arms, the Israelites won, but when he put his arms down, the Amalekites started winning.
12  When Moses’ arms grew tired, Aaron and Hur brought a stone for him to sit on, while they stood beside him and held up his arms, holding them steady until the sun went down.
13  In this way Joshua totally defeated the Amalekites.

The Israelites have come out of Egypt. They are on their way to Canaan. All of a sudden they are attacked by the Amalekites.

What do you do? You must fight! So Joshua and his soldiers take their weapons and fight. Strong men! They are not afraid. And so they defeat the enemies. – Or is it?

No,  it is not. Joshua needs Moses to support him. Only in this way … verse 13:

In this way Joshua totally defeated the Amalekites.

Moses stands on the top of the hill, holding up his arms. ‘To lift up your hands’  is in the Bible the posture of prayer [1]. In other words: Moses is praying.

As long as he is praying, Joshua and his army will win. As soon as Moses stops praying, they are defeated. Prayer is crucial.

How do you think our young people can do evangelism without prayer support from the congregation? They are soldiers like Joshua. Fighting ‘the enemies in the gate’ (Psalm 127:5). But they won’t succeed if you don’t lift up your hands in prayer. You must be Moses!

Ephesians 6 verses 10-20:

10 Finally, build up your strength in union with the Lord and by means of his mighty power.
11  Put on all the armour that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil’s evil tricks.
12  For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age.
13  So put on God’s armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy’s attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.
14  So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight round your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate,
15  and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace.
16  At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One.
17  And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.
18  Do all this in prayer, asking for God’s help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God’s people.
19 And pray also for me, that God will give me a message when I am ready to speak, so that I may speak boldly and make known the gospel’s secret.
20  For the sake of this gospel I am an ambassador, though now I am in prison. Pray that I may be bold in speaking about the gospel as I should.

The apostle Paul is in prison. He writes a letter to the church in Ephesus. He also talks about a struggle. We have to fight!

Who are the enemies? Not the Amalekites. It is not against ‘flesh and blood’, human beings. Our enemy is the devil and his evil army.

What do you do? You must fight! Like Joshua and his soldiers we take our weapons: faith, truth, salvation … the sword of the Spirit. So we will defeat the enemies. – Or is it?

No,  it is not. Joshua needs Moses to support him. Paul the professional apostle needs the congregation: please pray for me!

Prayer is the strongest weapon, verse 18:

Do all this in prayer, asking for God’s help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God’s people.

No preaching without prayer. Only God can convince and change people.

No evangelism without prayer. We can’t open doors, open hearts, bring people to Jesus!

No church without prayer. Not our activities will build the church. Only God can do it. We should lift up our hands.

This is my message. Prayer is crucial.

Yes, young people can go house-to-house to share the gospel. But while they are going out to evangelize, we want parents to be here in church to give prayer support.

Yes, moruti must preach. But he can only be bold in speaking the gospel with the support of the congregation. That’s why we call all the fathers and brothers into the office at 09h15 to pray for the preacher.

Thursday 18h00 we meet in church for our Bible study … and for prayer. We started with 20 or 30 people in January. Now we have 7 or 8 left. Even the mothers stopped praying …

Parents, do you pray for your children every day? Yes, you must talk with your kid about the LORD. But even more, talk with God about your kid. Pray for him or her.

You know the saying: Behind every successful man … there is a woman. I think it’s true. You can’t be successful without a stable marriage and a loving family at home.

Behind every successful pastor … there is a praying congregation. This is also true. I can’t do my job without your prayer support.

Exodus 17 verses 10-12:

10  Joshua did as Moses commanded him and went out to fight the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11  As long as Moses held up his arms, the Israelites won, but when he put his arms down, the Amalekites started winning.
12  When Moses’ arms grew tired, Aaron and Hur brought a stone for him to sit on, while they stood beside him and held up his arms, holding them steady until the sun went down.

Hands up! Try to keep your hands like this for 30 minutes. Can you do that? But your arms will get tired. Imagine that I put a brick in your hands. Then it will even be more difficult.

Church work is teamwork. Some people are in the frontline. Others are prayer warriors. And others again are helpers, holding my arms up. Joshua needs Moses. Moses needs Aaron and Hur. All of them need the LORD.

“What can I do for the kingdom of God?” that old lady said to me. “I can’t do evangelism. Or teach in the Sunday school.” That’s true. But you can pray! Pray for the elders. For Sunday school teachers. For your grandchildren. Lift up your hands in prayer. That’s your job!

Who of you prayed for moruti Mogale? As a pastor, you are in the frontline. Therefore the devil will attack you. Temptations are plenty: women, superstition, money. It’s easy to get tired and let your arms down . –

But if you did not pray for moruti, you are as guilty as he is. Church work is teamwork. We need one another. All of us need God.

Think about it. Who are you?

Are you a Joshua, in the frontline? Are you a Moses, a prayer warrior? Are you a supporter like Hur and Aaron?

Take the place that God gave you.

Who can you ask for prayer support? How can you support others in the struggle of faith? A word of encouragement. Take part in prayer meetings. Go visit someone. For who can you be an Aaron or a Hur?

May God bless our church. Amen.
